Allright Mr. Romance - Time to Show Her What You're Made Of
By Peter Bartula, the author of The Complete Male Handbook for Sex, Dating, and Other Trivial Stuff
5 Ways To Make a Big Hit With" The Little Woman" on Valentine's Day
"I wish you were more romantic!" The phrase that sends shivers down a man's spine almost as quickly as hearing her say - "Do I look fat in this?" As men, being romantic is about as foreign to us as the french guy who makes croissants at that little pastry store with the name we can't pronounce. We took high school classes that taught us how to fix cars and make candle holders out of wrought iron, but nowhere in the curriculum was there a course on how to be romantic. Where are we supposed to learn this stuff? Our Dad's are about as romantic as a Monster Truck Rally. All that our friends know about romance is what they learn from The Simpsons. But have no fear guys, the guy who did for dating what street gangs did for crime free city living has a few pointers that will keep you in her heart and out of the doghouse come February 14th.
The most important thing to remember is that you have to show that more than 10 seconds of planning went into your Valentine's Day agenda. You don't have to blow three months worth of paychecks to make it special, but you should do something that shows that you care about her and want the day to be one that she'll remember the rest of the year. You don't want to come home at the end of the night with her pissed-off at you because you said, "So what's unromantic about McDonald's for dinner and a hack-em-up horror flick?" Be creative and think of things that she enjoys. Just like the fishing skills that you've fine tuned to figure out what she wants for Christmas, do a little subtle probing and find out what she feels is special. Remember if you go over the deep end and concoct a thoroughly romantic day for her, you won't get kicked out of the male species or have your football season tickets taken away, but you will make your relationship with your significant other a little better.
Every woman is different when it comes to turn-ons and activities that they enjoy, but just about every woman likes to feel pampered and Valentine's Day is just the day to do it. Here are a few "can't miss" ideas that might help out.
1) Write a poem or something sentimental in a card. You don't have to be Shakespeare to impress her, you just need to write something nice regarding how you feel about her and your relationship. If you have a computer, use a fancy font with a frilly looking border and it will make it look like you spent hours creating your "love poem". Also, if you get stuck trying to come up with a word that rhymes with Sweetheart, remember that poems don't have to rhyme, or even have grammatically correct sentences for that matter. Just let the words flow out.
2) Buy her something like flowers or chocolates. Most guys don't know that eating chocolate actually produces a chemical reaction that makes women feel loved and emotionally satisfied. It's sort of like that chemical in turkey that makes you feel sleepy on Thanksgiving, but it does exist and it is the major reason that women love and crave chocolate.
3) Make her breakfast in bed. Since V-day is on a Monday this year, you can either do it the day before and tell her that "this is just a sample of what to expect tomorrow", or you can get up early to cook for her on the 14th and still make it to work on time. With a few cuts of an ordinary steak knife, those round little sausages can become heart-shaped in no time. It may seem queer to you, but as you have heard over and over - it's the thought that counts. Little touches like that go a long way towards making her feel pampered.
4) If you can afford it, rent a limousine for your evening's transportation. In a limousine, even a "dinner and a show" night will be forever filed in her memories under "great nights we spent together". Again, it makes her feel special and that is your goal for the day. Make sure to leave time to have the driver cruise around for an hour or so after your agenda has been completed. Once you put the screen up between you and the driver, you can do what ever you want to and he won't be able to see a thing.
5) Get some massage oil and give her a long body rub. Start with the neck and back, but take some time to be like Christopher Columbus - explore every corner of her world and prove that she isn't flat!
Lastly, remember to plan early. Since there are thousands of other schleps scrounging around for something good to do on that special Monday, your plans could die a grisly death if the event is all booked up by the time you call for reservations. When in doubt make your main focus on doing nice things for her and you can't go wrong. But if there is just no pleasing her and every one of your best ideas floats like a ten-ton boat anchor, then buy the wrought iron candle-holder from an 8th grader and say - "Ain't this beautiful, honey. And you thunk I couldn't be romantic."
