Question of the Week

Jacqui

Dear Jacqui:
I had a hysterectomy about 2 years ago. Since my hysterectomy, I've had a loss of sex drive. Consequently, my doctor prescribed estratest but it hasn't work that well. Can you recommend something else?
Megan

"Since my hysterectomy, I've had a loss of my sex drive"

Dear Megan:
Thank you for writing to me. Many women have the same symptoms you've experienced after having a hysterectomy. What you did not reveal to me is your age and also if you had your ovaries removed at the same time. Let me assure you that it is possible to reawaken your sexual desire. The key is understanding what caused the loss, is it a physiological or psychological issue?

First of all, I suggest you have your hormone levels checked. Many women with your symptoms are greatly helped by using a small amount of specially made testosterone cream applied to the clitoris and the inside of the vaginal opening. But you need to see a doctor to make that decision. She or he can also prescribe the cream.

Secondly, reflect about the other areas of your life? Are you in good health, are you generally happy with what's going on? Stress or confusion in other areas of your life can often affects sexual desire. If that is the case, it might be worthwhile to consider a few sessions with a therapist to regain your sexual desire and joy.
